“I wanted to make it a well-balanced diet, so to speak, for someone who has never seen any experimental film at all to be able to come and spend all three days absorbing a really good swath of what the range of experimental filmmaking can be.”
Voynar is the curator for SEEN/UNSEEN: A Festival of Experimental Film, a new showcase of experimental and avant-garde filmmaking styles set for Thursday-Saturday at Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center’s State Fair Park location.
“Oklahoma City has never really had an experimental film festival … and I personally love experimental film,” she said. “I think it’s important for a city like Oklahoma City, especially one that is currently undergoing kind of a renaissance of art (and) culture right now, to have exposure to different kinds of cinema. As you know, I grew up in Oklahoma City, and the first time I was even aware that was there was such a thing as independent cinema was when the Will Rogers Theatre was screening ‘Das Boot,” which I think was my freshman year in high school at McGuinness. I don’t recall ever even at the Will Rogers seeing truly experimental film. … It’s never been a mainstay of Oklahoma cinema.”
