Guerrilla Art Park 2016

Guerrilla Art Park 2016

Aug. 11 - Oct. 30, 2016 | NW 11th and Broadway

Oklahoma Contemporary’s inaugural edition of Guerrilla Art Park featured Oklahoma artists with a variety of approaches to temporary, outdoor public sculpture, ranging from whimsical to functional to thought-provoking. Nick Bayer’s T-Rex stood watch over the installation. Molly Dilworth’s Flags asked us to think about how they can serve as symbols, signs and markers and have a language all their own. Gary Kachadourian’s pencil drawings recreated the natural and built environment in intricate detail. Joe Slack used dynamic lines and curved forms to give his metal sculptures a sense of lightness and motion. Visitors could contemplate all of these works sitting on Beatriz Mayorca’s mosaic benches. All works in the exhibition were selected from submissions to an open call.

The exhibition was on the site of our upcoming arts campus and activated the space throughout a series of exciting events nearby, including our Midnight Streak 5K on Aug. 20, 2016 and the installation of Tomás Saraceno’s Cloud City in Campbell Art Park.

Guerrilla Art Park was located at the Showroom at Oklahoma Contemporary, four repurposed shipping containers temporarily housing exhibitions, events and an art library that serves as the first step toward Oklahoma Contemporary’s future location. The 4.6-acre arts campus will be home to a new 50,000-square-foot building with exhibition, education and performance space, an industrial arts building, a three-block arts park and space for outdoor exhibitions, education programs and public performances.
