Whiteout

Whiteout was an installation by artist Erwin Redl (born in Austria, based out of Ohio and New York) that used a grid of 550 suspended LED bulbs to animate Campbell Art Park. The bulbs turned off and on according to a computer program, creating a series of moving patterns that worked in tandem with the surrounding environment.

Whiteout was originally commissioned for Madison Square Park Conservancy in New York City in 2017, but was modified by the artist specifically for this location. Here, Redl had the opportunity to build a more intricate layout and to create more complex sequences of animation, in direct response to the location.

Redl became well known for light installations that played across the facades of buildings. In this incarnation of Whiteout, the lights in the middle of the park interacted with nature, reflected off the grass and trees, swayed as the Oklahoma wind blew. In New York, Whiteout was surrounded by skyscrapers and honking cars. In OKC, the installation had a more serene environment, and at night, access to the stars.
