Professional artists and designers teach digital media classes and workshops on a variety of topics and for a range of skill levels. Oklahoma Contemporary’s digital media lab includes 10 desktop iMac workstations loaded with industry-standard software, including Adobe Creative Suite, Logic Pro X and Ableton Live Suite. Many digital media classes are interdisciplinary in nature, encouraging students to blend digital media, photography, film and performance to create new forms.

Class | 2-D Computer Animation | Tess Elliot | $295

Get introduced to computer animation as an art form. Each week, the class will screen and discuss works from experimental animators and learn the tools and techniques of Adobe After Effects, professional motion graphics software. Students will create their own moving image compositions in After Effects. Each class will feature screenings, tutorials and studio time to work on projects and get feedback. Working independently and outside of class is highly recommended. Artists and art lovers of all backgrounds and skill levels are invited to join the course.

Learn about 3-D modeling for computer animation in Autodesk Maya, an industry-standard animation software. The class will cover all aspects of generating virtual 3-D forms for image rendering, 3-D printing and animation. Students will discover the craft of 3-D modeling while engaging in creative experimentation. Artists and art lovers of all backgrounds and skill levels are invited to join the course.

Learn to use the Max/MSP visual programming software to create dynamic visual graphics, videos and video effects that respond to musical input. You’ll also design visual media that composes music from various visual elements, sequencing and composing with imaginative and interdisciplinary methods. This course is ideal for a broad variety of artists, from projection artists and VJs to DJs and music producers. Together, the class will build a collection of visual media that can be used in live performance and customized to the performer’s or artist’s needs.

Examine the techniques of electronic sound synthesis from basic building blocks to advanced sound design. Emphasis will be given to musical sound synthesis, with an eye towards creating experimental, ambient and textural works of music from analog and digital sound generation sources.
Workshop | Analog LED Sequencer Synth Design | $200
1-4 p.m. Sunday and Monday, May 17-18, 2020
Learn to use an affordable set of materials to create a tabletop analog synthesizer with four steps, basic filter and tuning control. Students will learn basic soldering skills and analog circuitry and acquire synthesis fundamentals. Students will leave this workshop with a playable instrument that is visually customizable and fun to make.

Discover the basics of composing music in Ableton Live. After a tutorial on the software, students will create ambient soundscapes (alongside a short film clip provided by the instructor) that reinforce practical skills in sound design and musical composition. Together the class will reflect on potential connections between visual and sonic media. No prior experience with Ableton or music theory is required.
