In light of the COVID-19 public health crisis, Oklahoma Contemporary has temporarily postponed the opening of our new home, including spring Studio School classes and workshops. Read more about the planned launch of Studio School, now scheduled for summer, here.

Professional artists and designers teach digital media classes and workshops on a variety of topics and for a range of skill levels. Oklahoma Contemporary’s digital media lab includes 10 desktop iMac workstations loaded with industry-standard software, including Adobe Creative Suite, Logic Pro X and Ableton Live Suite. Many digital media classes are interdisciplinary in nature, encouraging students to blend digital media, photography, film and performance to create new forms.

Early registration: Members at all levels receive early access to registration.

Discounts: Members at all levels will receive a 10 percent discount on Studio School classes and workshops for the named cardholder and teens in their household. If you are not a current member, join today.

Supplies: Oklahoma Contemporary provides durable artist equipment for student use during each session. Students are responsible for purchasing their own supplies for courses—a syllabus and material list is emailed upon registration. Some items, including clay and ceramic tools, are available for purchase on the first day of class.

Teen registration in adult courses: In addition to offering classes and workshops for teens, Studio School invites high school juniors and seniors to register for select adult courses. If you wish to register your teen in an adult class or workshop, please submit an application here.

Class | 2-D Computer Animation

Get introduced to computer animation as an art form. Each week, the class will screen and discuss works from experimental animators and learn the tools and techniques of Adobe After Effects, professional motion graphics software. Students will create their own moving image compositions in After Effects. Each class will feature screenings, tutorials and studio time to work on projects and get feedback. Working independently and outside of class is highly recommended. Artists and art lovers of all backgrounds and skill levels are invited to join the course.

Learn about 3-D modeling for computer animation in Autodesk Maya, an industry-standard animation software. The class will cover all aspects of generating virtual 3-D forms for image rendering, 3-D printing and animation. Students will discover the craft of 3-D modeling while engaging in creative experimentation. Artists and art lovers of all backgrounds and skill levels are invited to join the course.

This class will use the Max/MSP visual programming software to create dynamic visual graphics, videos and video effects that respond to musical input. Students will also design visual media that composes music from various visual elements, sequencing and composing with imaginative and interdisciplinary methods. This course is ideal for a broad variety of artists, from projection artists and VJs, to DJs and music producers. Together the class will build a collection of visual media that can be used in live performance and customized to the performer or artist’s needs.

Want an introduction to working with software and digital art making techniques? In this class, students will create works of art and develop new skills along the way. They’ll be introduced to the leading industry software used by professional artists and designers, such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

This course will examine the techniques of electronic sound synthesis from basic building blocks to advanced sound design. Emphasis will be given to musical sound synthesis, with an eye towards creating experimental, ambient and textural works of music from analog and digital sound generation sources.

Workshop | Abelton Live: Short Film Composition

In this workshop, students will discover the basics of composing music in Ableton Live alongside a short film clip provided by the instructor. After a tutorial on the software, students will create ambient soundscapes that reinforce practical skills in sound design and musical composition. Together the class will reflect on potential connections between visual and sonic media. No prior experience with Ableton or music theory is required.
