
Oklahoma Contemporary offers the very best in fiber arts classes, workshops and opportunities for independent exploration. Located in The Studios building, the Fiber Art Studio features many floor and frame looms, as well as materials and equipment for dyeing. Fiber Arts instructors also offer courses in embroidery, sewing and other creative and contemporary applications of fiber traditions.

Based on recent guidance from the CDC and our local health consultants, we have updated our COVID-19 policies. Because all counties in the Oklahoma City metro area rank in the “low” COVID-19 community level, masks are optional in Studio School. Anyone who would prefer to wear a mask is, of course, welcome to do so.

Four-Week Class | Creative Crochet: Trash to Treasure

Combine traditional crochet techniques with repurposed and upcycled materials. No crochet experience necessary. Learn to create yarn from any type of plastic bag, clothes, receipts or even pantyhose. Choose from one of three instructor-provided patterns that Rachel Lynch will teach you how to read and modify. Finish class with a tote or shoulder bag and the triumphant feeling of going from dump to dope because you repurposed old stuff into new fashion.

Eight-Week Class | Sewing Fundamentals

This class is designed for those new to sewing, those who haven’t sewn in a while, those afraid of their machines, those who want to build a stronger sewing foundation or those needing a refresher on the basics of machine sewing. Instructor and artist Amber Lynn created a curriculum that is comprehensive and empowering for students. Using project-based learning, this class teaches how needles, threads, fabrics, stitches and your sewing machine work together as a team. Gain in-depth knowledge about your sewing machine while mastering the fundamentals of sewing through fun and useful projects.
An instructor-provided materials kit ($56.25) must be purchased on the first day. Students must provide their own working, preferably recently serviced sewing machine to each meeting.
If you don’t have a sewing machine, you can rent one through Studio School. Daily rentals are $12. Four-week rentals are $40 and eight-week rentals are $80.
Open Studio time is included with registration. Open Studio allows currently enrolled students to work on their projects in Oklahoma Contemporary’s studios outside of class meetings. Times vary weekly can be booked two weeks in advance.
Four-Week Class | Ice Dyeing

Use ice and snow (yes, we will provide snow in July) to custom dye T-shirts, tank tops, sheets, totes, fabric or yarn. If it’s cotton, artist Amy Young will teach you how to dye it. Ice dyeing is a fun technique that produces amazing, surprising results. Finish class with beautifully dyed objects and the skills to dye at home. No experience necessary.

Prerequisite: Sewing Fundamentals
Build on skills acquired in Sewing Fundamentals. Learn advanced sewing techniques, such as darts, ruffles, pleats and other shaping techniques, curved sewing, top stitching, lining, creating and using buttonholes, and understanding and utilizing all types of zippers and elastics.
An instructor-provided kit ($63) including materials as well as three of Amber’s favorite sewing tools, must be purchased on the first night of class. Beyond the required kit, you will need additional fabric and notions. Any additional needs will be discussed in class.
Required supplies: a serviced sewing machine, electric cord, foot pedal, machine manual and all tools, feet and accessories that came with your machine.

Prerequisite: Sewing Fundamentals, Sewing Fundamentals Expanded
This advanced course expands the techniques taught in Sewing Fundamentals and Sewing Fundamentals Expanded. Learn the basics of taking and working with measurements and how to understand, work from and modify a simple pattern. Practice sophisticated sewing techniques while working on patterns chosen by instructor Amber Layne.
Students will purchase a course kit that includes a simple pattern and three of Amber’s favorite sewing tools, which aid in proper construction. Students will need some additional fabric and notions beyond what is supplied in the kit (these will be thoroughly discussed in class).
Supplies required: a serviced sewing machine, electric cord, foot pedal, machine manual and all tools, feet and accessories that came with your machine.

Do you own a sewing machine with embroidery capabilities, but don’t know (or can’t remember) how to use it? This beginning course covers the exciting basics of machine embroidery. Learn to work with proper tools, threads and stabilizers and to understand stitching techniques. Through instructor-led projects, you’ll learn the basic skills needed to succeed — and you’ll receive digital designs to keep.
Supplies required: a serviced sewing machine with embroidery capabilities (sewing and embroidery combo machines only — no multi-needle machines), electric cord, foot pedal, machine manual and all tools, feet, hoops and accessories that came with your machine.
An instructor-provided kit that includes threads, scissors, needles, bobbins, several types of stabilizers and three of instructor Amber Layne’s favorite sewing tools must be purchased on the first night of class. Beyond the required kit, you will need additional fabric and notions that will be discussed in class.
