Fiber Arts

Oklahoma Contemporary offers the very best in fiber arts classes, workshops and opportunities for independent exploration. Located in The Studios building, the Fiber Art Studio features many floor and frame looms, as well as materials and equipment for dyeing. Fiber Arts instructors also offer courses in embroidery, sewing and other creative and contemporary applications of fiber traditions.

Due to the pandemic, courses will take place online via Zoom or onsite at Studio School with masks required and social distancing measures implemented.

Workshop | Block Printing on Fabric

Learn basic printmaking techniques to transform textiles into beautiful works of art. You’ll leave this short workshop knowing how to design a pattern and carve, ink and print a linocut block, and to set ink once dry. Students will need to bring pencil, paper and their imagination — all other materials are included. The alternate date for this workshop in case of weather, instructor illness or other issues that arise is May 2 from 3-6 p.m. Registration closes Sunday, April 18 at 11:59 p.m.

Four-Week Class | Natural Fiber Dyeing

Natural dye

Whether you’re interested in dyeing your own yarn for knitting and weaving or just love the science of extracting color from wildflowers, this course is for you! Students will learn to tend a dye pot, prep fibers, keep a dye journal and explore color shifts using pH levels and modifiers. This course will take place in person in a well-ventilated studio with enforced social distancing and masks required at all times. The deadline to register for this course is Sunday, May 9 at 11:59 p.m.

Online Workshop | Ribbon Skirt Making

Explore the art and history of the Indigenous ribbon skirt as it relates to the Anishinaabek. Indigenous people have been adapting the use of different materials as they have become available over time. Indigenous artists traded for ribbons, which they transformed into beautiful garments. Today ribbon skirts have become a significant item in the Indigenous fashion world. Basic sewing skills are recommended, and students must furnish their own sewing machine and materials for the workshop. Workshop is intended for adults and ages 16+ with a kind and respectful heart. Together with artist Rachel Denbow, explore basic weaving techniques to create your very own Pinterest-worthy wall hanging. This course will take place in a well-ventilated area with masks required and social distancing enforced. With table service from Café Contemporary, you can enjoy an adult beverage and nibbles as you get creative with new friends. Registration for this workshop closes at noon on the day of the event.

Four-Week Class | Beginning Knitting

Learn the basics of knitting! This course will cover basic techniques, including casting on, knitting, purling, knitting in the round, decreasing and finishing projects. By the end of the course you will have completed a one-of-a-kind scarf, dishcloth and hat. Give your stitchwork a contemporary twist with fiber artist Darci Lenker! In this four-week course, you’ll discover how to blend traditional approaches and unexpected materials, such as metal, wire and found objects, to create unique works of art. Because Studio School’s courses are small in size, you’ll receive personalized feedback from the instructor on techniques, material selection and composition. Students should have some basic embroidery knowledge prior to taking this course. Registration closes Sunday, April 4 at 11:59 p.m.

Eight-Week Class | Sewing Fundamentals

This course is designed for those new to sewing, those who haven’t sewn in a while, those afraid of their machines, those who want to build a stronger foundation in their sewing knowledge or those needing a refresh on the basics of machine sewing. Students will learn in-depth knowledge of their sewing machines while mastering the fundamentals of sewing through fun, useful, instructor-selected projects. Students must bring their own sewing machine to each class. This course will take place in-person in a well-ventilated studio with masks required at all times and enforced social distancing.
