Four and 10-Week Classes

Taught by experienced Studio School Instructors, Oklahoma Contemporary’s four and 10-week classes allow learners of all levels to learn and expand skills, improve techniques and experiment with familiar and new media.

Online courses: Most classes will be taught in real time over Zoom with recordings made available after the class. Students are responsible for having a reliable Internet connection and a Zoom-compatible device with microphone, speakers and camera. Students enrolled in select digital media classes will need to license and install software. Oklahoma Contemporary will not issue refunds due to student technology and connectivity issues.

Outdoor courses: Some workshops are held outside in the Studio Building's Leigh Ann and Paul Albers Outdoor Studio. Masks are required and social distancing practices will be enforced. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be postponed or cancelled and all registrants will be notified via email.

Supplies: Students registered for classes are responsible for purchasing their own supplies for courses — a syllabus and material list are emailed upon registration. Some items, including clay and ceramic tools, are available for purchase at Oklahoma Contemporary. Other items may be available for free checkout.

Teens:
Studio School invites high school juniors and seniors with arts experience to register for adult courses. If interested, please submit an application here.

Registration: Four and 10-week Winter Session classes run from Monday, Jan. 11 to Sunday, March 21. Classes take place once a week. Natural dye

Whether you’re interested in dyeing your own yarn for knitting and weaving or just love the science involved in extracting color from wildflowers, this course is for you! In this online class, you will discover basic fiber dyeing techniques that you can perform in your own kitchen.

Pick up a fun and useful set of skills while social distancing! Adobe Illustrator Foundations will introduce the application to new users and level up those already familiar with the program through practical exploration. The course will begin with an overview of the application workspace and core concepts before quickly turning to an exploratory model where students become proficient in drawing and shape building. Students are responsible for furnishing their own computer and licensing their own software for the duration of the course.

Discover the basics of acrylic painting with artist Calvin Pressley. This online course will introduce students to the fundamentals of drawing, including block-in, shape accuracy, proportion, separating light from shadow, establishing values and conveying light on form. Students will start by copying drawings that incorporate these principles and will eventually move into setting up their own still lifes and drawing from life.

Explore the art of hand building clay forms with an experienced instructor. This online ceramic class will focus on the three hand building techniques: pinching, coiling and using slabs of clay. Through a variety of hands-on projects, you'll leave this class with foundational knowledge of clay and completed ceramic works of art. Students in this course must reside in the OKC area and will need to occasionally need to come to Oklahoma Contemporary to glaze work and drop off and pick up fired pieces.

Learn the fundamentals of oil painting! This class will cover concepts including block-in, separating light from shadow, setting up proper value relationships, achieving the light effect, color relationships and more. Students will primarily use still life as a means to practice these concepts and will frequently paint from life. This class is an in-depth look at color theory in which students will use a basic primary color palette to learn how to mix any color and explore how colors change and interact with each other on the page. Students will experiment with using color patterns, placements and variations to create different visual effects in their artwork. Students may use acrylic, gauche or watercolor for this online class.

In this class, you'll explore the basics of writing personal narrative essays. Focusing on post-war and contemporary nonfiction writing, the course includes regular readings from masters like James Baldwin and Joan Didion, along with contemporary selections from Zadie Smith, Maggie Nelson, Eula Biss, and more. Students will workshop their own essays together throughout the course and leave with a final draft of a creative nonfiction piece drawn from their own personal experience.

Whether you're new to screenprinting or an old pro, this four-week course will expand your knowledge and encourage new horizons in the medium. Together with artist Virginia Sitzes, you will experiment with creating improvisational compositions with screens and printing with and on unconventional materials. To gain inspiration, you'll visit Ed Ruscha: OKLA to view the artist's storied Chocolate Room, which is lined with hundreds of screenprints made of Nestle chocolate. This course will take place outside with masks required and social distancing enforced.

Using the wheel as a point of departure, students will explore different approaches to making and creating new and exciting forms. The class will also examine the many ways to adorn the surfaces of clay creations, such as slip trailing, sgraffito, wax resist, underglaze and glaze application, as well as varied firing procedures.

This course is taught online and in real time via Zoom. Select this option ($175) if you are able to furnish your own potter's wheel.

Learn to operate Ableton Live, an intuitive yet professionally complex digital audio workstation that offers endless possibilities for music creators, producers and performers. Students will learn everything they need to know in order to comfortably operate Ableton Live, including recording and editing audio and MIDI, utilizing Ableton Live's built-in instruments and audio/MIDI effects, using Ableton Live in real-time performances, basics of Max for Live and more. By the end of the course, students will be able to comfortably navigate Ableton Live with the abilities to create, record, produce and edit. Note: This course is taught online via Zoom videoconferencing software and students are responsible for furnishing a computer and installing and licensing their own software. Local students may check out a MIDI keyboard free of charge for the duration of the course.

Planned with beginners in mind, this online, project-based course will teach students to create their own woven wall hangings. Students will design and complete three woven wall hangings while learning how to warp their looms, choose fibers, design from inspiration and use fundamental stitches and finishing techniques. Repetition of weaving basics will build confidence, and critiques and group discussions will offer constructive feedback and further inspiration.

Students in this online class will need to check out/return a loom and purchase a yarn kit in person prior to the beginning of the course. We therefore recommend that only students local to the Oklahoma City metro register for the class.

Hybrid Four-Week Class | Public Sculpture 101

What can you create on your dining room table or garage workbench? In this online class with artist Gabriel Friedman, you’ll learn basic principles of conceptualizing, designing and constructing small-scale sculpture at home. Students will use materials from an instructor-prepared kit ($18) and tools readily purchased at hardware stores or found around the home. Following the first three sessions of class online, you will meet outside with the instructor and your classmates in Oklahoma Contemporary’s Leigh Ann and Paul Albers Outdoor Studio for a weekend-long design sprint and rapid build of a large-scale, collaborative sculpture on March 13 and 14 from 1-5 p.m.

Learn the fundamentals of creating stop-motion animation with artist Nicole Emmons. Together, you will use analog and digital tools to animate objects and create short films that relate to themes of nature, growth and gardens. Students registered in this online class will need to have access to a smartphone with at least 300 MB of available memory, a phone tripod and a variety of garden-related objects they want to see come to life!

Learn the basics of embroidery while discovering thread painting (also known as needle painting). Though paint isn’t actually used, many of the stylistic techniques used in painting are applied to this approach. Threads are blended while stitching to suggest not only color, but also movement, light, shadow and dimension. Students will use their own photographs or sketches as the basis for their embroidered art.

In this online course, you'll explore the craft of songwriting by analyzing songs, discussing the creative process and sharing your own work in class. Each class session will focus on one aspect of songwriting, such as song structure, melody, chord progressions, build and lyrics. By the end of the course, students will have gained an appreciation for the craft of songwriting, developed a versatile compositional skill set and built a portfolio of two to three songs they can call their own.

To take this course, you will need the ability to sing and/or play at least one instrument. While we will not deal extensively with music theory, a basic knowledge of chords will also be helpful. Previous songwriting experience is not required.
