Class

Eight-Week Class | Free Improvisation

In this course, students will practice the art of free improvisation in a collaborative ensemble context, culminating in a live, improvised performance on the last day of class. Beginning with simple musical games and exercises, students will learn the basic techniques of improvisation and musical communication, eventually understanding how to structure a long-form piece of music without prior planning. In addition, students will engage with improvisatory music of the past 50 years and explore alternative forms of musical expression, including extended techniques, found sounds and wordplay. Registration closes on Sunday, June 27 at 11:59 p.m.
