Teen Courses

Studio School provides classes and workshops for teens on an ongoing basis. These courses offer a creative outlet as well as an opportunity to learn and expand skills, improve techniques and experiment with familiar and new media.

In addition to the courses listed below, high school juniors and seniors (or age equivalent) to are invited register for participation in adult courses. Please submit an application here by the general registration deadline to be considered. If you wish to apply Epic Learning Funds to a teen's registration in an adult course, please call (405) 493 9087.

Tuition for most multi-week courses does not include materials. When signing up for a class, all students agree to abide by the policies set forth in the Student Handbook.

Based on recent guidance from the CDC and our local health consultants, we have updated our COVID-19 policies. Because all counties in the Oklahoma City metro area rank in the “low” COVID-19 community level, masks are optional in Studio School. Anyone who would prefer to wear a mask is, of course, welcome to do so.

Four-Week Class | Ceramics for Teens

Beginners welcome, ages 15-17.

A ceramics class especially designed for teens. Learn to create sculptural forms and functional vessels like mugs, plates and bowls. This course introduces the two main techniques of ceramic arts: hand building and wheel throwing. Hands-on projects help you understand, experiment and create with clay. Finish class with completed pieces of ceramic art, and remind your fingers they can do more than scroll.

Course price includes all clay, and there are no additional fees.
This class begins on Thursday, July 7.

Four-Week Class | Creative Crochet: Trash to Treasure

Combine traditional crochet techniques with repurposed and upcycled materials. No crochet experience necessary. Learn to create yarn from any type of plastic bag, clothes, receipts or even pantyhose. Choose from one of three instructor-provided patterns that Rachel Lynch will teach you how to read and modify. Finish class with a tote or shoulder bag and the triumphant feeling of going from dump to dope because you repurposed old stuff into new fashion.

Eight-Week Class | Sewing Fundamentals

This class is designed for those new to sewing, those who haven’t sewn in a while, those afraid of their machines, those who want to build a stronger sewing foundation or those needing a refresher on the basics of machine sewing. Instructor and artist Amber Lynn created a curriculum that is comprehensive and empowering for students. Using project-based learning, this class teaches how needles, threads, fabrics, stitches and your sewing machine work together as a team. Gain in-depth knowledge about your sewing machine while mastering the fundamentals of sewing through fun and useful projects.

An instructor-provided materials kit ($56.25) must be purchased on the first day. Students must provide their own working, preferably recently serviced sewing machine to each meeting.

If you don’t have a sewing machine, you can rent one through Studio School. Daily rentals are $12. Four-week rentals are $40 and eight-week rentals are $80.

Four-Week Class | Ice Dyeing

Ice Dye3

Use ice and snow (yes, we will provide snow in July) to custom dye T-shirts, tank tops, sheets, totes, fabric or yarn. If it’s cotton, artist Amy Young will teach you how to dye it. Ice dyeing is a fun technique that produces amazing, surprising results. Finish class with beautifully dyed objects and the skills to dye at home. No experience necessary.

Travel Journal web

Create a mixed media sketchbook/travel journal to document and remember your summer travels, even if you’re only traveling in your mind. Artist Danny Joe Rose III will share mixed media and collage techniques to guide you in developing your personal style. Great for seasoned artists looking to hone their skills or for beginners wanting to experiment and learn something new.

Experience the thrill of drawing trained birds, like falcons and racing pigeons. Spend time watching and working with birds that most of us rarely see up close or for extended periods of time. You’ll learn basic bird anatomy and techniques for drawing birds resting and in flight. Creativity makes people feel good and animals make people feel good — find out what happens when you combine the two.

If you like blue, this class is for you. Cyanotypes are vivid cyan images that are fun and easy to make. This mixed-media class experiments with collage, fresh flowers, found objects, drawing, painting and layering techniques to produce cyanotypes on canvas, paper or fabric. You don’t need any knowledge of cameras or photography.
