Teen Courses

Studio School provides classes and workshops for teens on an ongoing basis. These courses offer a creative outlet as well as an opportunity to learn and expand skills, improve techniques and experiment with familiar and new media.

In addition to the courses listed below, high school juniors and seniors (or age equivalent) to are invited register for participation in adult courses. Please submit an application here by the general registration deadline to be considered. If you wish to apply Epic Learning Funds to a teen's registration in an adult course, please call (405) 493 9087.

Tuition for most multi-week courses does not include materials. When signing up for a class, all students agree to abide by the policies set forth in the Student Handbook.

Masks are required at all time in Studio School because classes involve sustained contact in enclosed spaces. Failure to wear a mask will result in removal from class without a refund.

A ceramics class especially designed for teens! This course teaches fundamental hand building techniques and introduces you to the potter's wheel. Hands-on projects help you understand, experiment and create with clay. Have fun, get your hands dirty and finish class with completed pieces of ceramic art.

Reduce stress, increase mindfulness and improve your drawing skills. This observational drawing course focuses on how drawing increases calmness and helps focus your mind on the present moment. Each class includes mindfulness techniques and drawing exercises, such as blind contour, working with positive and negative space, and compositional studies. Experiment with different mark-making methods and various materials like pen and India ink, watercolor and charcoal. Subject matter varies weekly and includes still life, portraiture and even sound! Improve your drawing and your living skills by learning how to calm and focus yourself during day-to-day stresses. Open Studio* time is included with registration.

Obsessed with music, mixing and beats? DJ School is for you. Learn to scratch, mix and switch groove with OKC DJs Tony Tee (Nymasis) and Angel Little. Tony Tee has performed with Talib Kweli, Devin the Dude, Lil Uzi, Future, Rakim, Atmosphere, Migos, Lincka and Afroman. Angel Little is a multidisciplinary artist, committed to building and maintaining thriving community endeavors.

Whether you want to perform or engineer, this is the right class — you’ll experiment with digital platforms and old-school vinyl. No experience is necessary; bring your love of the groove and a pair of wired headphones (required). Open Studio* time is included with registration.

Eight-Week Class | Creating Music for Video Games

Prerequisites: Basic understanding of melody and chords

Do you love the music in contemporary games or hate it and think you could make it better? This course is for composers, musicians or anyone who loves music and wants to learn how to create music specifically for video games. You’ll learn from an instructor who knows as much about music in games as he does about video games themselves! Dr. Zachary Daniels is a professional musician, composer and former professional gamer.

In addition to an historic and contemporary overview of music in video games, this course also teaches compositional techniques related to games, such as looping tracks, musical triggers and sounds for planned encounters. Open Studio* time is included with registration.

Join artist and musician Rachel Lynch to learn to crochet small stuffed yarn creations! During the first three months of the pandemic, Rachel crocheted more than 10 miles of yarn. She’s made everything from couches for cats to Harry Potter characters and a be-mittened Bernie Sanders. Crochet your dog, your Dad or your favorite video game character. No experience is necessary: Bring your ideas, and Rachel will teach you to how transform them into amazing 3-D creations to delight your friends and frighten your enemies. This class is designed for those new to sewing, those who haven’t sewn in a while, those afraid of their machines, those who want to build a stronger foundation in their sewing knowledge or those needing a refresher on the basics of machine sewing. Instructor and artist Amber Lynn has created a curriculum that is comprehensive and empowering for students. The class focuses on project-based learning that teaches you how needles, threads, fabrics, stitches and your sewing machine work together as a team. Gain in-depth knowledge about your sewing machine while mastering the fundamentals of sewing through fun and useful projects. Open Studio* time is included with registration.

Students must provide their own working, preferably recently serviced sewing machine to each meeting. An instructor-provided materials kit ($48) must be purchased on the first day.

Prerequisite: Sewing Fundamentals

Build on skills acquired in Sewing Fundamentals! We’ll cover advanced sewing techniques, such as darts, ruffles, pleats and other shaping techniques, curved sewing, top stitching, lining, creating and using buttonholes, and understanding and utilizing types of zippers and elastics. An instructor-provided kit, including materials as well as three of her favorite sewing tools, will be available to purchase on the first night of class. Beyond the required kit, you will need additional fabric and notions. Any additional needs will be discussed in class. Open Studio* time is included with registration.

Required supplies: a serviced sewing machine, electric cord, foot pedal, machine manual and all tools, feet and accessories that came with your machine. If you don’t have a sewing machine, you can rent one through Studio School. Eight-Week Sewing Machine Rental

From murder ballads to concept albums, Johnny Cash to Janelle Monae, the craft of songwriting is inextricably intertwined with storytelling. Delve into the rich history of story songs and learn to create your own musical narratives by discussing the craft behind great music and collaboratively workshopping songs. Learn to create layered lyrical meanings, represent narrative conflict musically, and make language and sound work together.

Prerequisites: Beginners welcome! No experience necessary.

Learn the gratifying art of transforming plant fibers into beautiful handmade paper! This class teaches you how to form sheets of paper with a mold and deckle, how to incorporate pigment and recycled materials, and how to create custom watermarks. After understanding the basics, you’ll experiment with shaping paper and creating dimensional forms. Every student finishes the course with a plentiful stack of handmade paper — perfect for bookmaking, drawing, watercolor, printmaking or even luxurious decorating and gift giving. No experience necessary, beginners are welcome. Open Studio* time is included with registration.

In addition to the required supplies listed on the course syllabus, students will also pay a $60 materials fee on the first day of class.

Prerequisites: Beginners welcome! No experience necessary.

Learn to build and bind your own blank sketchbooks, journals and artist books. Bookmaking is a great way to relieve stress and create unique and functional books to use or give as gifts. This class is perfect for illustrators, scrapbookers, journalers, writers, sculptors or anyone who wants to make and use fantastic blank books. You’ll be introduced to the methods, tools and terminology of bookmaking and learn multiple bookbinding techniques, such as saddle stich, Coptic binding, Japanese stab binding and case binding. Experiment with found and recycled materials and learn about the fascinating world of books made by artists.

You will finish the class with several one-of-a-kind blank books! Open Studio* time is included with registration.
