Teen Courses

Studio School provides classes and workshops for teens on an ongoing basis. These courses offer a creative outlet as well as an opportunity to learn and expand skills, improve techniques and experiment with familiar and new media.

In addition to the courses listed below, high school juniors and seniors (or age equivalent) to are invited register for participation in adult courses. Please submit an application here by the general registration deadline to be considered.

Studio School accepts Epic Learning Funds. Because Epic requires that vendors bill for services rendered only after a course is complete, please note that families are financially responsible for the unpaid remainder of tuition in the case of insufficient Learning Funds or non-payment on the part of Epic Charter Schools. You may request to apply Learning Funds here.

Workshop | Block Printing on Fabric

Learn basic printmaking techniques to transform textiles into beautiful works of art. You’ll leave this short workshop knowing how to design a pattern and carve, ink and print a linocut block, and to set ink once dry. Students will need to bring pencil, paper and their imagination — all other materials are included. Teen Course | Ceramics for Teens

Discover ceramics in a class designed with teens in mind. This course will focus on the three hand building techniques, including pinching, coiling and using slabs of clay. Toward the end of the course, you will also have the opportunity to explore the potter's wheel. Through a variety of hands-on projects, you'll leave this class with foundational knowledge of clay and completed ceramic works of art. This course will take place inside with masks required and social distancing enforced. Registration closes Sunday, Jun 27 at 11:59 p.m.

Online Workshop | Composition Crash Course

Learn to simplify drawing compositions using notans, a Japanese term meaning “light and dark.” You'll practice reducing images to two and three values in order to create strong compositional ideas to apply to larger works, as well as using standard types of rectangles to compose images. In addition, the instructor will discuss how to use Photoshop as a tool to aid in compositional study. The alternate date for this workshop in case of weather, instructor illness or other issues that arise is Jun. 12. Registration closes Sunday, May 30 at 11:59 p.m.

Metal cuff bracelets and metal tools

Discover the art of metalsmithing as you create your own custom cuff bracelets. In this afternoon workshop, you'll learn how to add decoration by stamping and hammering texture to design your own unique metal piece. You’ll leave the workshop with two complete pieces — one cuff made in copper and one in sterling silver. All skill levels are welcome, no experience is necessary and all materials are included. Just bring your creativity! Whether you're just learning the basics or prepping a college or AP portfolio, you'll pick up essential new skills in this four-week course. Outdoor Workshop | Raku Ceramics

Join us for a two-day, hands-on workshop as we dive into the topic of Raku ceramics. Together, we'll explore traditional Japanese Raku as it relates to religious and cultural practices and its later expression among American ceramicists in the mid-1900s. During the first workshop session, you'll use hand building techniques to create tea bowls. We'll meet the following weekend to glaze and fire your works using the Raku process. This in-person workshop will take place outside. Masks are required at all times and social distancing will be enforced. All materials and tools are included in the cost of tuition, and this course is open to students of all levels. Registration closes Sunday, April 11 at 11:59 p.m.

Online Workshop | Ribbon Skirt Making

Explore the art and history of the Indigenous ribbon skirt as it relates to the Anishinaabek. Indigenous people have been adapting the use of different materials as they have become available over time. Indigenous artists traded for ribbons, which they transformed into beautiful garments. Today ribbon skirts have become a significant item in the Indigenous fashion world. Basic sewing skills are recommended, and students must furnish their own sewing machine and materials for the workshop. Workshop is intended for adults and ages 16+ with a kind and respectful heart.
