Showroom | Showcase: Hieroglyphics 2017

Ginna Dowling

Oct. 11 - Dec. 23, 2017 | Showroom

Showroom | Showcase was a series of installations by local artists in the Showroom, located at NW 11th and Broadway. From Oct. 11 to Dec. 23, we featured Ginna Dowling’s Hieroglyphics 2017: The Spirit of our People.

Ginna Dowling’s hieroglyphs are contemporary versions of ancient symbols. Using the simplest of methods — tearing construction paper by hand she constructs visual symbols for important aspects of her own life, as well as the lives of people around her. These forms are translated into vinyl, which she develops into site-specific installations. In addition to creating her own forms, Ginna works with members of the community to add onto her installations. The 'identity glyphs,' represent participants of all ages, races, sexual identities and gender, socioeconomic factors, and education levels. Ginna’s installations merge these individual identities, personalities, and characteristics, with all their similarities and differences, to form a creative rendering of a cohesive, peaceful, and accepting community.

Ginna will be conducting workshops while her pieces are installed at the Showroom, the results of which will eventually become part of this exhibition. In addition, visitors can drop in during Showroom hours to create their own “hieroglyphics.”

Ginna Dowling received her MFA in Printmaking from the University of Oklahoma and established INK DROP PRESS, her studio and teaching locale for children and adults. She is the fifth woman artist in three consecutive generations of her Oklahoma-based family. Her work has been exhibited internationally, and is included in the permanent collection at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. She is a recipient of the OVAC Project Grant, an artist-in-residency at Cill Rialaig Art Center in Ireland and, most recently, Norman Arts Council Cultural Connections exchange residency at Clermont-Ferrand, France.
