Veterans and Active-Duty Military Initiative

Overview

Oklahoma Contemporary is committed to creating meaningful connections between veterans, active-duty military personnel and the world of contemporary art. With veterans comprising approximately 10% of Oklahoma’s adult population, and many active-duty service members calling our state home, the arts center recognizes the importance of fostering creativity, community and well-being through the arts.

Engaging in studio practice offers a powerful way for veterans and active-duty military personnel to connect with one another, express themselves and explore new forms of creativity. Research shows that the arts help build resilience, strengthen coping skills and improve self-esteem and overall well-being.

Oklahoma Contemporary’s program is designed to support participants at every stage of their creative journey, employing expert teaching artists and university faculty to provide guidance in technical, intellectual and artistic aspects of studio practice. Whether exploring art for personal growth or professional development, veterans and active-duty military members will find a welcoming and supportive space to create, connect and thrive.
