Making Space: Summer Mural Series
NW 11th and Broadway
6/9-8/30 and 9/5-Fall 2019
This summer and fall, Oklahoma Contemporary is exhibiting a series of murals along the construction fence at our new building site.
This project reflects a new version of Guerrilla Art Park, an annual exhibition of outdoor public art by Oklahoma artists, held in the summers of 2016, 2017 and 2018. The mural series shares Guerrilla Art Park's goals: to showcase local talent, give artists an opportunity to grow and develop their skills and offer free public art to enrich downtown Oklahoma City.
The mural series has two rotations of three murals in June and September 2019. Each round features one work from an emerging artist and two from established Oklahoma artists collaborating with an up-and-coming artist. Preference was given to those from backgrounds/communities not widely represented in Oklahoma City public art. These murals serve as a mentorship project to introduce new artists to public mural creation.
The first rotation of murals featured mentoring artists Sergio “Tank” Ramirez (with Iliana Barrientos) and Amanda Zoey Weathers (with William Larason) and emerging artist Jaiye Farrell. These murals were painted live during Second Saturday June 8.
Currently on view, the second rotation of murals features mentoring artist Brooke Rowlands (with Shakurah Maynard) and Kris "GERM" Ermey (with Jonathan De Luna), as well as emerging artist NiCole Hatfield. The murals were painted live on Thursday, Sept. 5.
